How it works

Your map in about a minute.

Your photos already know where you’ve been. Sofar reads where and when they were taken, right on your iPhone, and fills in the map.

  1. 1

    Allow Photos

Sofar reads only the place and date of each photo. Never the pictures themselves, and nothing is uploaded.

Sofar asks to find your countries in Photos: only where and when, stays on this phone, you decide what counts.
  2. 2

    Review what it found

Every country arrives with its dates. Untick layovers and anything that doesn’t belong.

We found 19 places: Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom and more, each with dates and photo counts.
  3. 3

    Watch it fill in

Your countries light up, counted your way, with the share of the world you’ve seen so far.

You’ve been to 26 countries, 13% of the world, so far, on a dark world map.

Count your way

Count every country, your way.

Travellers don’t agree on what counts, so Sofar lets you choose. Your number stays the same everywhere: on your map, in your stats and on everything you share.

197

UN members plus fourThe 193 UN members, plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan. The count most travellers use.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland count as one country or four. Your choice.

  • Been, lived, want to go

Mark any country yourself, and start planning a trip from the ones on your list.

Your passport

Every journey, every kilometre.

Sofar works it out from the places and dates in your photos: days abroad, distance travelled, your longest trip and the furthest you’ve been from home. Routes show on the map and on a globe you can spin.

Questions

Good to know.

Does Sofar upload my photos?

No. Sofar reads the place and date of your photos on your iPhone to find the countries you’ve been to. It doesn’t upload the pictures and doesn’t read them as images. You can also skip the scan and mark countries yourself.

Do I need an account?

No. Your map, trips and settings stay on your iPhone. You can export them as CSV or JSON at any time, or start over from the You tab.

How does Sofar count countries?

You pick the list: UN members only (193), UN members and observers (195), UN members plus four (197, the default) or all 250 countries and territories. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can count as one country or four. The number is the same everywhere in the app.

What do I need for Plan with AI?

An iPhone with Apple Intelligence. Planning runs on the device with Apple’s on-device model, and your prompts are not sent to a Sofar server. On other iPhones the feature is hidden, and the offline planner with “Plan it for me” still works.

How does the Holafly eSIM work?

For trips abroad, Sofar shows a Holafly eSIM for your destination with unlimited data. You buy and install it from Holafly before you fly, and you’re online when you land. Sofar Pro includes 12 GB of Holafly data: 1 GB a month for a year, with a free Holafly account.

Is Sofar free?

Yes. The scan, your map, counting and trips are free. Sofar Pro is a one-time unlock for life: invite three friends, or buy Lifetime once on the App Store. There is no subscription.
